PROJECT: Writing Desk
Comments: A traditional European Writing Desk provides an intimate and friendly atmosphere for letter-writing -- or any type of writing. I built this one for a European customer, newly arrived in the Midwest, and she found that she was equally at home with it in the New World.
I built the first desk about 1985. Then in 2011, we got a request to re-make the same Writing Desk, in the same wood, updated built for the new millenia. Below is the new desk, the same timeless design but fitted for a laptop.
The drop-leaf writing surface closes to keep the contents of cubbyholes and drawers hidden from view. Two large drawers below store paper, pen and ink.
In both cases, the design was aided by the discovery of an exceptional plank of figured koa wood, from Hawaii, and it added its own personality to the finished product.
