PROJECT: Bed Frame
Mortise-and-Tenon Joints
|
Comments: The request for this bed frame came in simple terms: keep it simple.
The spare style was inspired by the simplicity of Shaker furniture, and displays the natural beauty of the wood as the only ornament.
The joinery is pegged mortise-and-tenon. By loosening the pegs, the frame can be taken apart for moving or storage.
The mattress surface itself is a series of thin, flexible strips of maple wood.
Each is loosely pegged into the two side rails, creating a pliable surface that takes the place of a standard box spring. Only a mattress or futon is needed to make a comfortable bed. The finish is satin urethane varnish.
Wood: Red Oak
