PROJECT: Kitchen and Writing Desk
Comments: Built to architect's specifications, this brand-new kitchen in a brand-new residence has storage for all the usual cooking items, as well as a separate wine closet.
The attached writing desk allows the chef to to retrieve a favorite menu before diving into the task of cooking, or write a quick note to the rest of the family. It has a curved hand-veneered cherry countertop suspended over a deep two-drawer file cabinet.
A trio of open shelves are suspended directly from the ceiling at the right hand of the countertop, and provide easy access to the client's collection of special glassware.
Behind a soffit over the sink, recessed lighting illuminates the main cooking area through a glass shelf. The stove vent penetrates the shelf, creating a special warm spot to sit quietly and observe the cook in action.
Adjacent to the main cooking area is a line of storage cabinets next to a full-length wine closet. The glass-paneled doors are painted, and match other doors in the residence.
The cherry veneer is finished with urethane varnish for toughness and water-resistance.
