 PROJECT: Kitchen Great RoomThe grand entrance becomes the kitchen in this sleek and modern space behind a wall of glass.
Designed by Bill Larson Architects, the home is brand new, and this spacious room is at the heart of the house. It functions as kitchen, dining room and passageway through the light-filled room from one part of the house to another. Looking through the main entryway, the kitchen dominates the view with an island of cabinetry seemingly floating in air. Actually, it is slung beneath the gently sloping ceiling beams with steel rods. Guests can park themselves at the breakfast bar facing the kitchen, and await the feast. To their left, facing the windows, is additional cabinetry to hold napkins and serving items.
Standing at the large center island, the chef enjoys an unobstructed view of the outdoor landscaping and pool, despite being surrounded with functional cabinetry on all sides. All the cookware and storage one could need are within a few easy steps. The long series of cabinets behind the island hold the appliances--sink, dishwasher, built-in microwave, and refrigerator--as well as shelves above for stemware and glasses, and shelves below for everything else. The island is almost twenty feet long, and the upper cabinets are suspended from the laminated ceiling beams with steel pins embedded in the wood. On the opposite side, the stove is surrounded by cabinetry. The upper cabinets have shelves for dishware and glass storage.
But the lower cabinets, rather than shelves, are all drawers of various sizes, which is a much more convenient way of storing pots, pans and cookware. Overhead lighting, skylights and undercabinet lighting work together to brighten the interior of the kitchen. Across the dining room, the wall of cabinetry shown below holds a lifetime's collection of serving items and utensils, all handy to the dining table. The open boxes at the end match the stair treads on the other side of the stairway wall. They also make a great place for Santa and his helpers to take a well-deserved rest from their holiday duties. All of the cabinetry is finished with three coats of urethane varnish for lasting protection of the wood. Wood: White Oak
