PROJECT: Kitchen Room
Comments: A spacious and bright kitchen now graces this Kansas City area home, thanks to a whole-house remodelling project that included this newly created room.
The design by George Turbovich features textured molding applied to White Oak doors and drawer panels. A rich antique finish allows the wood's natural color to show through.
The large center island is surrounded by cabinets and appliances on three sides, creating an efficient and comfortable area in which to work culinary magic.
On one side, the sink faces an exterior window, under a row of cabinets which store dishes and glassware. A dishwasher and microwave are tucked neatly into this wall as well.
Centered on the second side is a large cooktop with vent hood, surrounded by drawer and cabinet space for pots, pans and cookware.
On the third side, a sub-zero refrigerator and double oven are built into a wall of cabinets. Some of the cabinets contain shelves; others have rows of pull-out trays for easier access to the contents.
This kitchen has no shortage of drawers, which provide a more convenient way to access stored food, tools and utensils than most cabinets. The twenty-five drawers are of all heights and widths, allowing them to hold a wide variety of sizes and shapes.
Of course, there is shelf space galore, including all the upper cabinets and a significant portion of the lower cabinets as well.
The large center island has storage on both sides: a full row of cabinets with shelving facing the refrigerator, and drawers, cabinets, and a pull-out waste container facing the sink.
And what fun would cooking be without a few secret surprises? Tucked in just to the right of the double oven is a special pull-out spice rack which, when closed, virtually disappears from view.
In the adjoining dining area, a tall pantry cabinet stores canned goods and food nearby, easily accesible from the kitchen. Tucked into a cozy corner is a small kitchen planning desk with file drawers below and cabinets above.
The kitchen has given years of good service to the family, and will continue to do so for a long time to come.
