PROJECT: Kitchen Cabinets and Countertops
Comments: My client decided the old, dark, dusty cabinets in this kitchen had been around long enough and gave them the heave-ho.
The new cabinets have veneered door panels with traditional hinges. The countertops are made of solid maple.
The center island is a custom-built cabinet which fits neatly around an existing ancient butcher block, and contains a new electric cooktop. Oversize drawers underneath the top hold heavy pots and pans.
At the far end of the kitchen, an existing window was replaced with a greenhouse that allows flowers and fresh herbs to be grown right in the kitchen.
Even the refrigerator was veneered with the same red oak as the rest of the kitchen.
To the right of the refrigerator, the microwave, toaster and oven all share cabinet with a built-in spice rack.
All the walls and ceilings of the kitchen and adjoining dining room have been covered with tongue-and-groove Red Cedar planking. A skylight well was installed in the kitchen ceiling to bring light and a view from above.
The sink has its own intimate view through a north window, and soffits above the sink and to the right over the greenhouse window provide lighting. A dishwasher and appliance garage are tucked away below the sink, with plenty of cabinetry above for glasses, dishware and supplies.
In the adjoining dining room, cabinetry and countertop function as a home office and buffet, keeping the both the clutter and the serving items hidden safely away from view.
Wood: Red Oak cabinetry; Western Red Cedar walls and ceilings.
