PROJECT: Intimate Kitchen
Comments: "This is such a wonderful kitchen," said the client. "I can't begin to tell you what a difference it is to be in this space, now. I sure don't miss the old cabinets!"
This cozy kitchen was a replacement for the original, which was built with the house more than forty years ago.
The new is a welcome relief from the old: drab, white painted cabinets with worn-out appliances were thrown out the back door, and the new work makes the room brighter and cleaner. The whole kitchen was remodelled, too.
The simple design of the sink cabinets is identical to the original, placing the sink in front of an exterior window, and including the soffit lighting and the open shelves at the end of the upper cabinetry. The drawers below the countertop include a special compartment for a pull-out cutting board salvaged from the original kitchen.
Across from the sink, within easy reach, is a dishwasher fitted with a front panel to match the other doors. A glass-door cabinet above it provides storage for condiments and spices. The refrigerator sits inside a special enclosure to the left.
In a change from the original kitchen plan, a new cooktop and grill is mounted in a cabinet with drawers to hold all the cooking utensils within easy arm's reach. The two large drawers in the center also provide storage for large pots, pans and lids.
Through the far doorway, what was originally a butler's pantry has been converted to a floor-to-ceiling cabinet with an inset double oven. This has additional storage cabinets above and below the oven for miscellaneous items, including a set of tall, narrow compartments for trays and cookie sheets.
The finish is three coats of urethane varnish.
