PROJECT:

Display Cases

Comments:   Like the woodwork and detailing of the historic house in which they are installed, this pair of display cases was intended to seem as though they had been built along with the home in nineteen-seventeen.

Right Hand Shelf

They not only display the clients' collection of art and literature, but are themselves an architectural element of the Craftsman-style home.

The design was created by the clients' friend, architect Paul Helmer, to flank either side of the original French doors leading to an outside deck. He completed the effect with lights inside the cabinets as well as period lighting sconces on the wall above.

The wood, like all trim in the residence and much of Craftsman furniture and woodwoork, is quartersawn red oak, distinctive for its ray or flake figure.

The cases and shelves are made of double-thickness lumber, to harken back to time when most lumber was full dimension.

Left Hand Shelf

The left unit has a storage compartment below, with burnished hardware to match the Craftsman style.

After matching the color of the existing wood trim, the cabinets were finished with four coats of satin urethane varnish.

Wood:  Quartersawn Red Oak.
