PROJECT: Chapel Altar
Comments: In the Kansas City Veterans Hospital, there is a chapel that serves those of all religions, faiths and spiritual beliefs.
We were recently commissioned to provide a new Altar for the focus of worship in the chapel.
The goal was to provide a sense of communion, compassion and guidance for the veterans and families who use the hospital, and inclusive of all personal spiritual beliefs or religious denominations.
We designed the Altar in collaboration with Desiree Lee, Interior Designer of the Veterans Hospital, to provide that focus on a place of universal worship.
When the tall Black Cherry doors are closed, the display of natural wood alongside the decorative artwork of the side panels evokes a connection with the natural world in which we live that is universal to all faiths.
Each tradition can celebrate its own events and ceremonies in the Chapel by opening the center doors of the Altar to reveal specific objects of worship.
Buddhist icons, Jewish Torah, Hindu dieties, Islamic Star and Crescent, or as shown at left, the Celtic Cross, each can be displayed within the grotto of the Altar interior.
In addition, two new storage units were provided at the rear of the Chapel for books and supplies. They are made to blend with decor of the rest of the work.
We were truly honored to be entrusted with this project and hope it will continue to provide spiritual food for all who enter.
