PROJECT: Entrance Towers
Medieval England might have been the inspiration for this unique design.
At the entrance to a group of wooded homesites, these two stone towers command attention from the street...sentinels protecting every man and woman's castle from invasion, and friendly beacons guiding the weary traveler back to hearth and home.
They flank the entrance to a small residential enclave called Maple Valley Farms, at 186th Street and Mission in southern Johnson County.
The project was designed by Wolfgang Trost Architects of Overland Park, Kansas. Their original plans, shown left, provided a vision for the finished project.
Once the stone masons had finished the circular towers and roof framing, Samurai Woodworks built the solid walnut doors and side windows. We installed them, using heavy wrought-iron strap hinges for the doors, and sealing in the windows with polyurethane adhesive.
We also laid the roofing, where the conical shape of the turrets required each of nearly two thousand shingles to be taper cut before nailing in place. Finally, we helped design the copper finials and installed them along with lightning protection.
Wood: Black Walnut doors and windows; Western Red Cedar shake roofing.
